England 2000 Tour To South Africa Biography
The 2000 England rugby tour to South Africa resulted in a 1-1 series draw for England, with the Springboks winning the first Test matche 18-13 and losing the second one 27-22, with Jonny Wilkinson scoring all of England's points in the second Test. England also played a series of non-Test matches against regional teams, including a 52-22 win against the North West Leopards and a 55-16 win against Nashua Griquas, and a 36-27 win against the Valke.
The first test was not without controvesy, as Dan Luger scored the only try, but a referee decision denied England a potential try and Braam van Strataan kicked six penalties to secure the Springbok's win.
The second test launched Jonny Wilkinson onto the world stage as a world class fly-half. He scored all of England's points in their historic 27-22 win against the Springboks. This win was a massive achieement, as it was England's first win over the Springbok's on South African soil since the 1995 world cup.
The tour also allowed England coach Clive Woodward a opportunity to test new and upcoming players, such as Steve Borthwick and Liam Botham, to earn their place in the senior squad. The former going onto coach England.
Following the second test victory, England went on to beat Soth Africa again in a match at Twickenham in December 2000, securing a second successive win against the 1995 Rugby World Champions.
The tour followed on from the 2000 Six Nations Championship, which was the first series of the Six Nations Championship, following the inclusion of Italy into championship. The championship was won by England and although England had appeared ready to be the first nation in the expanded Championship to win all its games and complete a 'Grand Slam' they met winless Scotland for its final match. Scotland earned a surprising victory and denied England the Grand Slam. France, the last winner of a Five Nations slam in 1998, would win the first Six Nations slam in 2002.
