2009 Six Nations Bibliography.
The 2009 Six Nations Championship, known as the 2009 RBS 6 Nations because of the tournament's sponsorship by The Royal Bank of Scotland, was the 10th Six Nations Championship, an annual rugby union competition contested by the six major Northern Hemisphere rugby union national teams. The tournament was held between 7 February and 21 March 2009.
Although the tournament was the tenth in its current format, including the competition's time as the Home Nations Championship and the Five Nations Championship, it was the 115th Northern Hemisphere rugby union championship. The championship was contested by England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.
Ireland won the Grand Slam and Triple Crown, their first Grand Slam since 1948 and Triple Crown since 2007. It was Ireland's second Grand Slam in total. England finished as runners-up, and they also won the Calcutta Cup. The 2009 tournament featured the first Friday night game in its history, played between France and Wales at the Stade de France.
Martin Johnson the England coach announced his 32-man squad for the 2009 Six Nations on 14 January 2009, including both Tom Palmer, who l missed the entire tournament with a shoulder injury, and Tom Rees, who is ruled out of the first three games with knee trouble. Matt Stevens was replaced in the squad by Julian White after he was found to have taken a banned substance. Lewis Moody broke his ankle while training with his club, Leicester Tigers, and was replaced in the England squad by Steffon Armitage, brother of full back Delon Armitage. Andy Goode, Joe Worsley and Paul Hodgson were all called up to train with the squad and went on to take part in the tournament While Louis Deacon and Olly Barkley replaced the injured Tom Palmer and Shane Geraghty in the squad.
It all started so full of promise but again England ran out runners up. Another season of disappoinment.
