Gareth Edwards Bibliography
Sir Gareth Owen Edwards CBE was born 12 July 1947 and is a Welsh former rugby union player who played scrum-half and has been described by the BBC as "arguably the greatest player ever to don a Welsh jersey". In 2003, in a poll of international rugby players conducted by Rugby World magazine, he was declared the greatest player of all time.
He was prominent in the Welsh national team that was to the fore in European rugby in the 60s and 70s. He is one of a small group of Welsh players to have won three Grand Slams including Ryan Jones, Adam Jones, Gethin Jenkins, Gerald Davies and JPR Williams.
In the 2007 New Year Honours, he became a CBE for services to sport. He was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours of 2015, for services to sport and for charitable services.
He won his first international cap for Wales on 1 April 1967 at the age of 19 against France in Paris. Wales lost 20–14 to eventual championship winners France. Between 1967 and 1978 Edwards won 53 caps for Wales, including 13 as captain. All his caps were won in succession; he never had a dip in form or an injury that would allow anybody else to take his place. He scored twenty tries in internationals.
Phil Bennett Bibliography
Phillip Bennett OBE was born 24 October 1948 and is a former Welsh international rugby union fly half from 1969 to 1978. His flair and range of tricks, including his famous sidestep and swerve, meant he was a firm favourite with crowds.
He was born in Felinfoel, Carmarthenshire and made his Wales debut on 22 March 1969 against France in Paris at the age of 20 when he became the first Welsh substitute in international rugby, replacing an injured Gerald Davies. Initially, he played in a number of positions including fullback and centre, but settled in the fly-half position in 1972. He succeeded the legendary Barry John in that position. He played for Wales between 1969-1978, making 29 appearences and scoring 166 points.
JPR Williams Bibliography
John Peter Rhys Williams MBE FRCS was born 2 March 1949 and is a former rugby union footballer who represented Wales in international rugby during their Golden Era in the 1970s. He became known universally as J. P. R. Williams (or sometimes just as JPR) after 1973 when JJ Williams (also John) joined the Welsh team.
He played in the position of fullback and was known for his aggressive attacking style. With his long sideboards and socks around his ankles, "JPR" was an iconic figure on the legendary 1970s Wales team.
However, despite playing fullback throughout his international career, his favourite position was flanker, where he played for Tondu at the end of his career. He is one of a small group of Welsh players to have won three Grand Slams including Gerald Davies, Gareth Edwards, Ryan Jones, Adam Jones, Gethin Jenkins and Alun Wyn Jones.
An orthopaedic surgeon by profession, he has continued to be involved in rugby since retirement, currently serving as President of the Bridgend Ravens.
