The shaven head of Matt Elliott saved Scotland from international embarrassment in tiny San Marino. For 71 nervous and frustrating minutes it seemed that Craig Brown’s World Cup hopefuls would do everything but score against opposition who are usually happy just to get a corner. But when Leicester defender Elliott rose to nod in Allan Johnston’s left-wing cross it was not long before that goal was followed by another from Don Hutchison and the three qualifying points were assured. Neither player can claim any more than the most tenuous links allowed by Fifa to claim Scottish heritage, but both underlined their importance to the Scots’ bid to reach Japan and Korea in 2002. They had hoped to travel to Croatia for Wednesday night’s showdown in Zagreb with a far healthier goal difference tally of course, but in the end it had to do against their stubborn hosts. Up until those goals all Scotland had to show were a succession of near misses which, although legitimate, do not mean much when the opposition are part-timers from a tiny mountain side. The first half had been nothing but frustration for the 3,000 Tartan Army foot soldiers whose mood had been buoyed by news earlier in the day of England’s defeat by Germany and Kevin Keegan’s hasty resignation. In the end the Tartan Army went home happy, changing their song from "All we are saying is give us a goal" to taunting songs about Kevin Keegan.

Matt Elliot Bibliography

Matthew Stephen "Matt" Elliott was born 1 November 1968 and is a former professional footballer, most notably as a defender for Leicester City. Although English born, he was never selected to play internationally for England, and played for Scotland.

He was an instant success at Leicester, and went on to captain the side. He was in fact the first person to captain the Foxes at their new Walkers Stadium in 2002.  usually played as a central defender, though he was also an effective emergency centre forward due to his bustling physique and bruising style of play.

Highlights of his career include scoring both goals for Leicester in their victorious League Cup final against Tranmere Rovers in 2000.He also won promotion to Division One with Oxford United in the 1995-96 season.

Club career

He began his career in non-league football with Leatherhead and Epsom & Ewell, before getting his first taste of professional football with Charlton Athletic. Unable to break into the Charlton first-team, he moved to Torquay United within a year. He then worked his way up the ladder, signing for Scunthorpe United in March 1992, moving on to Oxford United in November 1993, and finally getting his chance in the Premiership when he was signed by Leicester City in early 1997 for a transfer fee of £1.6 million, which to this day remains Oxford's record sale.

When Martin O'Neill left to manage Celtic in July 2001, he made an attempt to lure Elliott to the club in a £3.5 million bid (O'Neill would raid his former club for the likes of Neil Lennon and Steve Guppy).It was unsuccessful when Elliott signed the last contract of his career in August 2001, which would last until June 2005.Elliott's last European appearance came in a 3-1 defeat to Red Star Belgrade in Vienna on 28 September 2000 in the 2001 UEFA Cup.It remains the club's last ever European match up to 2017.

He had a loan spell at Ipswich Town before his retirement. His final season was thwarted by a knee injury, and after making only three appearances, He retired from football in January 2005.

International career

He won eighteen caps for the Scotland national team, scoring one goal which was a header from an Allan Johnston cross in a 2–0 win against San Marino. He made sixteen starts and two appearances from the bench, including his debut against France in November 1997. He was in the Scotland squad for the 1998 World Cup although he did not appear in any of the games.

Managerial career

On 9 June 2008, he was unveiled as the new assistant manager to former Torquay team-mate Dean Edwards at Unibond Premier team Hednesford Town. After a season that saw the Pitmen finish just outside the play-offs, he stepped down from his position at Keys Park in May 2009 to concentrate on other business interests.In June 2009 he joined Midland Alliance team Oadby Town as Co- Manager.
